CULTURAL COUNTERPOINTS: Examining the Musical Interactions between the U.S. and Latin America

In Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Indiana University Latin American Music Center, the LAMC hosted an academic conference during Oct. 19-23, 2011, at the Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University, Bloomington.

Almir Côrtes (guitar), Nilton Moreira (flute) & Leandro Barsalini (Percussion)

Almir Cortes is a performer and scholar in the field of Brazilian instrumental music. He has played professionally and held workshops all over Brazil, In the United States and in Europe. Mr. Cortes has recorded two CDs: "Almir Côrtes" (2006) and "Choro da Voz" (2008). Presently, he is finishing his Ph.D. in popular music performance at UNICAMP (State University of Campinas-Brazil). In addition to playing the guitar, he also plays mandolin, electric guitar, cavaquinho and viola caipira.

Nilton Moreira, Brazilian flutist, master's degree in Music Performance and Bachelor in Flute by Minas Gerais Federal University (UFMG). He is currently studying a doctoral course in music at UNIRIO University, researching and performing Brazilian popular music. He plays in the classical orchestra "Philharmonic Orchestra of Espírito Santo". Mr. Moreira has recorded the CD "Choro e Canção Patápio Silva" (2002).

Leandro Barsalini is Professor of Rhythmic and Drums at UNICAMP (State University of Campinas-Brazil). He has master's degree in Music Performance and Bachelor in Philosophy, Popular Music and Orchestral Percussion. Presently he is working on a doctoral research about samba on drum set. He has played in Festivals in Cuba, USA, Croatia and Slovenia, and works regularly at Campinas Symphonic Orchestra and many groups of brazilian popular music.
