Probably this is a driver related issue, so if it's working with other distros it should work on any distro, if the driver is compatible with the kernel. You just have to compile it if it's not included in the distro.

But if you don't want to use Ubuntu, you have many choices to find the best distribution for you.

I have experienced some problems with Ubuntu on my R61 (still can get no sound). But nice to see it went smoothly with yours.
