  • During the backswing, Anthony’s left knee pops out, away from his body, instead of working toward his right knee. This affects perfect balance at the top of the backswing, as your weight is likely transferred to the right heel and outside of the right foot instead of to the inside of the right foot. Perfect balance is a key factor in the player’s ability to smoothly and quickly start the downswing back to the left side with a hard leg drive, thereby delivering maximum power at impact.--GS.

  • @rogeradultry Even when on the stool the hips can still turn by sliding on it. Here is the evidence. Swing while standing but keeping your hips 100% square to the target line the whole time. See how far you hit it then. Put it up on youtube. You'll lose at least 50 yards, probably more. Good luck.

  • Now, to be clear, you may be really athletic, and natural body support may not be your problem at all; could be that you don't have an innate sense of the transmission of power from wherever you generate it (usually lower body, but not in the lunging or overdramatic way a lot of amateur theorists think these days), or that you do have that innate sense but that something is blocking that transmission (can be tension, can be technique, such as being off-plane). This is true of throwing as well.

  • Hmm. Do you have a swing on YT?

Reason I was asking is, I used to teach (and played a little for a living, as well), and one of the the theories I worked with is that you'd work with an athletically inclined player differently than you would somebody who was less athletic, or at least one who didn't have a whole-body-support sense. I'd have a guy actually throw a ball a couple of times to see whether he had a natural tendency to move the rest of his body to support that throwing motion or not.

  • @emncaity distants

  • Interesting--what kind of problems do you have throwing a ball? Do you mean throwing it long or throwing it accurately?

  • Re accuracy v. distance, I don't get your point. Mostly that's a false dichotomy anyway, since the best technique involves elements that add force in a specific direction, which increases both accuracy and distance. But that doesn't sound like what you're saying; it sounds like you could only be talking about the driver, since of course accuracy is paramount as you get closer to the hole, which certainly affects choice of technique, unless you advocate "different swings" with irons v. driver.

  • @beckiesking Love the hostility. First of all, it is true that like most modern players (certainly not all), he depends on coil and resistance, therefore less hip turn on the backswing--but that _certainly_ doesn't "make it almost impossible to come OTT." He's very conscious of plane and gets the downswing moving from the ground up, which tends to guard against OTT.

  • Faldo's kind of a special case. Most people don't know that he was among the longest of the long hitters on the Eurotour before he decided he was too erratic and took up with Leadbetter. With him, I think it's more of a conscious choice to make every swing at about 70-80%, and never push beyond that. But your point is still well-taken--your mechanics do tend to be very different depending on whether you're working with speed/strength/acceleration or with slow-twitch momentum-builders.

  • what swing???
