Steve Sturman of Fred's Alaska Seafood fishing for smelt (hooligan) in 2007. This is a sustainable fishery that we fish every summer! We use dipnets because that is what Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game requires, and while people can eat these fish, we send ours as bait grade to the states! This is a run that lasts a few days and has billions and billions of fish in it. We only catch about 1% of them so this fishery can be enjoyed by the generations to come! Happy fishing!

  • why use those tiny hand nets?

  • @marcusmac1608 because that is what we are allowed to use according to state regulations! Rules are rules!

  • You harvesting those commercially?

  • Yes we do, mostly they get sent to zoos and such for animals.
