  • Because the sword is held somewhere in the middle of the blade.

    Some blade leave a portion of it unsharpen to facilitate half-swording.

    Half swording is to "shorten" the sword for better control in close quarter. It also allow stronger thrusts, which may be used to defeat armored opponents.

    It also can be use to utilize the hilt and the pommel as a weapon other than the blade, something useful against armored foe.
