Got to say I absolutely groaned at the argument on idealized women vs. idealized men. To greatly simplify this issue, the difference is that the idealized men are a male power fantasy, and the idealized women are a male sexual fantasy. Heck, all you had to do was look at the art examples you gave for both sides; in the female images they tend to look submissive and sexual whilst the men are in action poses. To be honest, you could use a little more reading around the subject.

We were talking about the athleticism ideal, NOT the sexualized nature. I've not only read a lot on the subject & have spoken about it at GeekGirlCon. Notice we objected to the outfits of Star Sapphire & the Halle Berry Catwoman. In my weekly column, I've written often about how it's unfair and absurd to constantly put women in thongs or in sexualized, submissive poses and I and my co-host Jill Pantozzi talk about it often in the weekly Crazy Sexy Geeks podcast. So I agree with all your points.

While I agree that male superheroes are also super buff, there's no such thing as "hulk-shaming," whereas there is such a thing as "slut-shaming." So yes, they can be idealized women, that's fine, but they don't all have to wear pasties to kick ass.

    - Obviously. Which is why we took objection to Star Sapphire and the Halle Berry Catwoman costume.

I dont care what anyone says. Mr. Miracle's costume is what first attracted me to the character...he is one of my favorites! His action figure is sitting right next to my keyboard here.

Asking this guy about Super hero costumes is like talking to my grandmother about the same thing ...who cares...he doesnt get it. It is people like him that gave us the 1982 Vancouver Canucks jersey.

That being said it is funny though to see what he says though. Love his head nod at 3:46....spatially perplexed

@quixote22: Everyone can have their own opinion on Mr. Miracle, that's fair. As for "this guy", Tim is a friend, a genuine authority on fashion and also a fan of superheroes. And as he's never been involved in sports wear, is not Canadian & was a college professor-then-dean from 1982 until a few years ago, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make about him & design. & why not ask grandma? This show is about NO geek elitism. We can all enjoy whether we know Clark Kent's middle name or not.

I think there is a difference from overly sexualized outfits and outfits that express their femininity. Like for example Wonder Woman her costume while it can be seen sexual to me isn't the main focus. I think it shows off her female qualities while still giving her a sense of strength and pride. Women shouldn't be forced to dress like men to be taken seriously. Now the 90's is generally where we get the oversexualized costumes. Women had thongs and low cut tops that was just male fantasy.

There is actually is something akin to "hulk shaming" but of course, its much less prevalent. I'm sure you've heard comments like "he must be compensating for something" or "What maters is what's in their head, not their stupid physique" or something along those lines.

You can wear a cup to protect the genitals that will also decrease the male's genitals profile on the costume. It would make sense for crime fighting.

Besides, both Batman and Superman have extremely handsome faces which is something you're born with.

Batwoman always had badass costumes, but the old costume was pretty cool.

Actually, I think that explanation for the boob window makes her look like a dumber character. "I'm not worthy of an S Symbol, so instead I'll just show my cleavage."

Just have her show her cleavage because she wants to.
