The inside of this outlet was previously soldered. The outside is subsequently soldered to ensure both mechanical strength and provide a hermetic seal.

While I respect your efforts, you are demonstrating the " glob " method of applying a low heat solder, where the solder is melted onto the copper to close gaps, and sweated properly using a soldering copper.This is not the old school method wherein the metals would be pre-tinned and then fit together, and then a very hot iron applied with a proper soldering method which has you apply the iron to the metal and then the solder on the edge of the seam,

What process do you use to tin and clean your irons?

Do you use powdered ammonium sulfate with water as a dip and silver solder melted in a block of sal ammoniac for deep cleaning?
