@CrazyOldMaurice69 James Buchanan did have a serious affair with a woman in his youth with potential marriage not too far over the horizon. But other family members of his wife- to - be did not think he was the type and, not too long afterwards under not fully understood circumstances, his future wife - to - be died at a young age and James never got so seriously involved with another woman again.

It's because Buchanan did nothing to prevent the Civil War that he deserves to be called our worst president. Lincoln had only two choices -- pursue a hard line towards maintaining the Union or allow the chaos of secession to continue. And no allowed secession would have remained peaceful.

James Buchanan IS the worst president of the United States. During his administration the nation was involves in many conflicts involving slavery, Buchanan never did anything to solve the problems and that led to a irreconcilable discontent between the north and south. Also the release of the book "Uncle Tom's cabin" affected his presidency. He according to the Presidential ranking, is the worst president so far. He let the Union fall apart.
