Anna Moffo had a glorious voice and flawless technique. Placido Domingo sang Otello in blackface and I don't recall there being a protest. This program was on Italian television in the 60's, and I don't think they were so PC in Italy back then, especially with opera where credulity is so often strained to the utmost.
Interesting - I thought that only African Americans were allowed to perform this - She did a nice job but this black face is killing me - what an insult and embarresment to the wonderful Italian people
I love most things about this, but adapting the ending of the opera to give Moffo Porgy's aria is ridiculous and kills the plot.
