brilliant performance. pure genius

Von Karajan was a follower of Hitler, and believed that the woman's place was in the home making children. One reason Germany lost WW2 was old fashioned failure to use women for industry as the USA and Russia did.

@sibrp62 That's the way things were back then. This orchestra hired its first female member in 1982 and even today female members make up 20% of its members at most.
