Southern Sri Lanka: Tsunami widow skilfully weaving palm fronds for sale. http://premlanka.com

Premlanka Hotel, Southern Sri Lanka:
Memorable holidays for the discerning.

Panels of woven palm fronds are cheap, eco-friendly and durable. In Sri Lanka, they are used widely for simple roofs, walls and to provide privacy.

Even skilful labour is cheap: 5 minutes work; almost 4 pence profit. But this does produce a useful income.

Sinhala soundtrack, titles in English

Created as a 4-minute video for the original UK TV Channel4.com FourDocs service.

  • @Virusacid Perhaps that was my point? A little glimpse of life where the average income is less than a Dollar per day.

  • How did you calculate the profit? Looks like inputs are free.

  • @VimbaiZ No, she had to buy the coconut fronds and also pay for having them transported. This manufacturing can happen only where there is enough fresh water for soaking the fronds. She uses a nearby irrigation ditch so does not have to pay for the water.

  • You know 4 pence is only .06 US, right? Not what I consider easy money.
