ANCHOR:
Some good news to tell you from Australia's Gold Coast. Rescuers spent seven hours freeing a whale caught in fishing nets. Let's take a look.
STORY:
A humpback whale is caught in a shark net. The young mammal dragged about 200 meters of netting from its mooring off Queensland in Australia.
When fishermen noticed it had gone they launched a major search. They soon located the whale but took seven hours to free him. Rescuers said at one stage the 40 tonne mammal was dragging both the
netting and the 12 meter fishing boat trying to free him.
[Steve McCourt, Sea World Animal Rescue]:
"He was pulling the shark contractor's 36 foot boat with him as well and we really had problems slowing him up."
The net was eventually cut away and the whale swam away unharmed.
23 whales have been caught in shark netting in Queensland over the past eight years. All but three have been successfully freed.
fishing nets should be banned. If you can't farm your fish, don't eat them, assholes.
