This was the winning run for robotic performance at the Montana Smart Move FLL Championships, February 2010. It was 320 points, pretty good for a team whose robotic coaches didn't know that much about programming it, lol! These guys put a lot of hours in, 5 months straight, sometimes several hours at a time to get to this point. I was pretty impressed at how well the did trading off as a team in the pressure and noise of the competition.
They started out all building robots (they start with a pile of various pieces, no instructions), then after several weeks they voted on the one to keep. Then they tried all kinds of different ways of getting "missions" done, a lot were scrapped. For anybody not familiar with FLL, they get points for each mission completed, like bringing loops back, making the truck roll down, carrying people on the robot, touching and not touching certain parts on the mat. It's really tough to get it to get it to work the same every time, as everybody whose tried this knows. Lots of variables. Well done, Bus Boyz!
They also won first place for quality of research, for their "Smart Move" presentation about how to get more people to ride the city bus. Yes, we do have some city buses in Montana!
that was sooo cool!
