Monrovia, Liberia, December 17, 2010
Election materials from a National Elections Commission (NEC) warehouse are loaded from a truck onto a UN helicopter at Robertsfield International Airport. The materials are bound for polling centers in Barclayville, Greenville and Harper. With security provided by members of the Liberia National Police, workers recruited by NEC load boxes transported from regional NEC warehouses onto the helicopter operated by the Ukrainian military contingent. Materials being loaded include Green plastic bins that contain voting registration materials, and smaller boxes with solar panels and batteries for lighting at polling centers, and additional cardboard boxes that contain photo equipment to help monitor activity that will take place at the polling centers. Each polling center will receive a complete kit of voting materials with the aforementioned items. A NEC official in charge of custodial documents monitors the materials being loaded onto the helicopter to deal with record keeping and any possible discrepancies that may arise in the delivery process.
UNMIL is assisting the National Electoral Commission with delivery of election materials to polling centers throughout Liberia. The operation starting on December 17 is expected to run through early January 2011 in preparation for a voter registration exercise that is the precursor to presidential elections to be held in late 2011.
