In 1971, one month after the notorious My Lai massacre, 100 Vietnam veterans gathered in a Detroit hotel conference room to testify to the horrors and crimes they had witnessed and committed during combat. Although not covered in the news at the time, the meeting was recorded by an anonymous film-making collective and turned into an angry, haunted and essential documentary-cum-confessional that went virtually unseen for more than 30 years. As with the classic Shoah, this vital time capsule presents the horrors of war unadorned.

Made by Winterfilm Collective, US 1972, 96 mins

  • We were just a bunch of murdering thugs.

  • Too bad we haven't learned our lesson. They've now come out with Winter Solider Iraq/Afghanistan edition. And we're adding Pakistan to that list.

The Iraq Veterans Against the War IVAW have held hearing like this recently.

  • @truthequality It boggles my mind that nobody listens to the modern day stuff. Are we so desensitized that we just don't care about innocent people being butchered, or is it just hidden from us these days?

  • @area51er6 There's only a little archive footage, but the testimonies are so intense it doesn't matter. It's more effective hearing these guys talk than watching gruesome shit. The real shit, man.

  • what song is this in the backround

  • Mainly interviews, very little documentary footage.

  • Does this documentary have a lot of archive footage from the war, or is it mostly soldier interviews in black and white???

  • @Spetznaz there's no oil in vietnam

  • its like irak, nothing changes. They want the oil, so, they said they have weapons of mass destruction, then bloup up the twin towers themselves to justify an invasion

  • A free fire zone in Vietnam was an area which was considered to totally occupied by the enemy or enemy sympathizers.

The US army would drop pamphlets telling all civilians to evacuate the area. Then they would bomb the shit out of it and send in advance recon squads like Tiger Force who's job it was to kill everything that moved.

If you happened to be a civilian, who didn't get the message or just refused to abandon your home, you could still be classified as an enemy.

  • All this shit is absolutely true. Check out "Tiger Force war crimes" on Google.

Or read Tiger Force: A True Story of Men and War by Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss.

The US army command encouraged civilian killing in "Free Fire" zones. They fought the war according to body counts which further encouraged civilian killings by on ground commanders. Who would then purposely misidentify them as enemy combatants to increase body counts.

They then investigated these incidents and covered it up.
