Another trip to the lakes with my bivi bag. This time I went to the top of Helvellyn which, at over 3,000 feet, is a proper mountain. A much longer day than my Blencathra trip.

  • like the video,

hey, is that an Alkpit Bivvy Bag?

i must get out and try this kind of camping myself...

    cheers

    BB

  • Yes it's the AlpKit bivi. I've just been up to the lakes for the third time and this time it rained on me most of the night so great test of the bag. I was dry as a bone in the morning, my sleeping bag was a little bit damp near the bag's opening but otherwise it worked very well.

I also took an AlpKit down sleeping bag, the SH600, which was more than warm enough (it was a warm night though).

  • @wslogue

i have the same bivvy bag, but ive never tried it,

how did you go on with the insects?

i was thinking about getting a hooped bivvy bag...

  • I've never had any trouble with insects but that's probably because I always sleep high up. I met a couple of walkers who'd camped the previous night in the valley south east of Ullscarf about 1000 feet lower than me (I slept at the top of High Raise) and they said they were loads of midges.

I've heard that, even in Scotland, you can escape the midges by sleeping up high. To be safe in Scotland in summer, I think you'd need to be above 3000 feet.

  • I'm doing another trip up to the lakes in the next four weeks, not exactly when. The aim is to make a much slicker bivi film, a half-hour episode which I could pitch to some TV channels. First I've got to quit my job (hurray), then wait for a few days of decent weather.
