If you've never used a chain tool, practice on an old chain. Like you say, you have push that pin just right so it'll be easy to reassemble.

Im doing this right now and I am at the point where I need to shorten my chain. How do you figure out how many links to take out?

@saynotoemo84 put the wheel in and keep it as far into the dropouts as you can, so that there is no more space left. Then wrap the chain around chainring so that the two ends meet then keep pulling the other end until its kinda tight (not too tight) keep in mind that once the chain is on you can move the wheel back in the dropouts for tension. So one the chain is tight count the number or links left over and take out one less than the amount you count. Message again if still confused.
