The behaviors were ones the wolves came up with on their own. We put them on cue by the "mark and capture" method where the animal is rewarded for a behavior that the trainer likes, and then the animal is taught what the trainer calls the behavior and that the animal will be rewarded for offering the behavior when the trainer asks for it by name or gesture.

Reinforcing behaviors like this offers a pleasant way of the wolves of combining environmental enrichment and increasing safety for humans by giving the wolves a number of behaviors to perform on cue. It can be used to interrupt or distract a wolf that is about to perform an undesirable behavior involving humans, so it can be a great help in interacting safely with the wolves.

  • @ailie101 their not their pets. the wolves are in a sanctuary

  • wolves should not be kept as pets. they should be protected in the wild or in a reservation center like yellowstone. they are not meant to be trained and domesticated...

  • I took a seminar on behavior and management of captive wolves at this park. The people that taught this seminar were very knowledgeable and experienced in all that pertained to wolves and hybrids and all kinds of animals and issues for that matter. They taught us about biology, behavior interpretation, and we met the pack. They also have a store that you can access online; they have books on wolves and hybrids. I would recommend getting an ethogram-it helps out a lot.

  • wolvesare my favorite animal and i am only 17 and only a senior in high school but i have already taken classes on small animal science and training and behavior of all k9's and other animals. i dont know but i especially love wolves. i would die to be able to intern at a place like wolf park, and actually get to experiance what the wolf mind really is. wow.
