with such a short crumple zone that is able to protect the smart means that the crumple zone must be very rigid and stiff and that means that the forces from the impact would be thrown onto the occupants. the merc occupant would suffer minor scares and bruises, but in total the merc would be able to survive a faster offset impact because of its longer crumple zone that absorbs more energy from the crash.

at least an undamaged passenger cabin makes getiing the bodies out easy.

I agree and was thinking the very same thing.

Older cars had a rigid passenger cells. Tow truck drivers say they have seen paramedics pull dead people out of older car models (pre-mid 80's) that had less than 500$ worth of body damage.

Thats disturbing.
Another thing I've notice is that the impact at the smart simply leaves no space for the driver's legs. If the driver survives, he'll probably loose both of his legs.

It only looks that way because the car is so small, but the driver's legs are above the crumple zone inside the passenger cell.

But it looks like the bigger car reaches, or very near of it, the steering wheel of the Smart Car. How can be the legs protected of it?

The windshield in the Smart ends at the forward edge of the passenger compartment. Notice how they're making a big deal of how the windshield is unaffected? That's why.
