Turned to stone? Nonsense. The bodies rotted out leaving molds in the solidified ash which were filled with plaster by the excavators. The people were overcome by gasses and covered in ash, pumice and debris, not lava. Pompeii was covered for about 1600 years, not 2000. Some did flee.

One man went back for his gold. It was still scattered around the place where he fell. He was one of the "stones"
There was plenty of warning. Pliny the Elder went to check out the unusual cloud and to rescue a friend. They had a choice of dodging hot pumice or staying in the house. Pliny's body was found unharmed.
Claiming Allahdidit at Pompeii makes as much sense as claiming some 200,000 people died in the tsunamis because Swedish tourists were behaving "abominably". I.e., none at all.

They weren't frozen. They were overcome by poisonous gas and rapidly buried.
