Real Life Japan is a series in which you can see what it is really like to live in Japan. This is just my everyday normal life here. You can see what it looks like to live in Japan. I live in Kobe, Japan. This is my city and these are the places I go, the things I do and the people I meet. Enjoy.

Partial transcript:
(Scenes 1-3)
Alright, it's Tuesday December 13th. I'm getting my day started. I decided I'm going to go get a gym membership today. I was going to a gym near where I live. It was really easy to get to. It only took 5 minutes to walk there. It was cheap. On the Japan standards it was cheap. But they shut down in December, so now I have to go to a different gym which is farther away. It's a nicer gym, but twice as expensive....

It's a cloudy day, so you know, days like this it's always hard to get up and get going and get outside.

Alright, here's what I'm going to bring with me. I'm just going to bring some sneakers here, some weighlifting gloves. Harbinger. An old t-shirt and some shirts and then I got...Yeah, so I'm probably going to have to pay 2 months up front....So I'm bringing these 10,000 yen notes.

Genkan scene:
This is my genkan and this is where I put all my shoes. People don't wear their shoes in their home. This keeps the floors clean in the house. My genkan is quite narrow so it's tough to keep all my shoes organized neatly.

Stairwell scene:
This is my narrow stairwell. My house is very narrow so the stairs are narrow too. This house and these stairs might be okay for a small Japanese person, but it's really tough for me to fit through this narrow stairwell. People get kind of freaked out when they come to my house the first time and see this narrow stairwell which is really steep.

Riding to the Gym:
I put on my helmet and ride to the gym. It's a cloudy and cold day out today. I'm able to take my camera out and shoot a little bit as I drive, but mostly I want to focus on safety when I'm driving. Here you can see some of the street scenes of Kobe, Japan.

Inside the Gym:
I walk in the gym and it looks like a nice place. The gym is in the Home stadium in Kobe Japan. There is a sports shop at the entrance of the club. People have to take their shoes off when they enter the gym as well and they have to bring an extra pair of shoes which are only to be used in the gym.

Making the contract:
I'm talking to the staff at the gym and he is explaining the rules of the gym and how much I will have to pay to use the gym. I had to pay for about 2 months up front in cash and then after 2 months they will start withdrawing money from my bank account.

Locker room:
The locker room is spacious and clean with showers, mirrors and sinks and hair dryers.

Stadium:
If you have a membership at this gym you an run around the field for running exercise.

The gym:
There is a big studio for dance classes and other classes. There is a room with massage chairs where you can relax. Most of the equipment in the gym is American made and stuff I have seen in the American gyms I have been to. This is by far the nicest Gym I have seen in Japan, and it's nicer than the Gold's Gym in central Kobe.

Outside the gym:
I feel good that I finally took the plunge and got a membership at this gym. I've been wanting to get back in shape for a long time. Working out has always been a hobby of mine which I greatly enjoy. It's nice to get in touch with a part of myself I loved so much in the past.

In the convenience store:
I went to Sunkus convenience store which is a chain convenience store here in Japan. I went there to get a snack before I had to go to work. The guy in the convenience store was really nice and explained some of the products to me on camera.

At the mall:
After work I head over to Canal Garden mall in Harborland. There is a big Christmas tree and an illumination display. I ask a Japanese girl for some information about the place and she helps me and also tries to speak English. I'm tired from the exercise and work and it's time to call it a day.

  • I just got back from Kobe from visiting my family and worked out at oasis gym on tor road on a trial membership for a week. It was real small and was the first time I've worked out in a Japanese gym. It gave me the impression the Japanese fitness industry is pretty dated in terms of strength and conditioning from what the personal trainers were doing to help their clients achieve their goals. maybe the gym i went to attracts more casual clientele.I'll try to see some more gyms my next visit!

  • Such a nice guy

  • that was a smith not a squat rack and a hack squat not a quad extention

  • The Conbini guy recommends the very most expensive one. Smart guy.
