U People directors Olive Demetrius and Hanifah Walidah travel to LA for the Pan African Film Fest and get a tour of Watts and Compton from politician and political blogger Jasmyne Cannick.
great video gurls im form new zealand and ever since ive been a 12yrs old ive always wanted too go to compton just been interested in the area im 35 brown boy will i be safe there???lol
Drugstores, Liquor stores, 99 cent stores, and check cashing stores are hardly just a black problem in a black neighborhood. I live in a predominantly White neighborhood by the beach, and I have well over a dozen pharmacies, many of which are open 24 hours, at least 3 dozen liquor stores, 2 99 cent stores, maybe more, in a 2 mile radius. Hell, I have 6 Liquor stores in within 3 blocks of me. It's quite simple really. Businesses will go where they think they can make the most money.
over time, these things add up. they add up to premature morbidity (i.e., my mom spending over $150/mo on meds) and premature mortality (e.g., 5-6 year difference in life expectancy).
cannick hit it: why do we need all those drug stores? because we're the sickest people..."we fuel an entire industry"
i disagree though that it simply about our behavior. we live in infested, deteriorated residences and go to dusty, unclean schools. then, we deal with a much higher burden of everyday micro-aggressions (e.g., threat of violence, mistrust, powerlessness) and psychological stress.
