http://www.karenrothnutrition.com Holistic Nutrition Consultant, Karen Roth, MS, NC discusses alternatives to harmful salad dressings.
Many people are eating more salads which is great. But they are sabotaging their health with what they dress it up with.
Many of the off the shelf dressings still contain MSG - hydrogenated oils and its clearly marked. The fat free dressing usually contains a good amount of sugar and way too much sodium.
Let me run some numbers by you then I will share with you a rare find, a delicious prepared dressing off the shelf that wont sabotage your health.
The serving size for salad dressings are 2 TBS, so keep that in mind as you read these numbers.
Typical Ranch dressing will be 100 cal, 11 grams of Fat, and 300 mg sodium
Typical Blue Cheese will be double that, 200 cal, 20 gr of fat and the same amount of sodium.IF you use only 2 tbs.
So you're saying, hey, I use Fat free or light. Lite dressing may be low in calories, but often contain high fructose syrup and lot of sodium, I found a Fat Free Raspberry dressing that not only had high fructose syrup, but Red 40 and Blue 1, so why would they need to add Red dye 40??? Because the label clearly says it contains 2% or less of red raspberry juice! Does that make you guys angry, it does me. False advertising!
And dont be fooled by the new dressings that spray on, they contain multiple preservatives that can be dangerous to our health, and I even saw a honey mustard flavor that had yellow die #5 and artificial flavor along with preservatives, so tell me what makes that a food?
You can do the healthier alternative and use olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette but I know that can get boring and sometimes you just want a bottled dressing for convenience.
Well, good news, I found one that Id like to share with you. Its only 10 calories for 2 TBS, NO Fat, only 10 mg of sodium, and 2 grams of sugar. And it tastes good too.
The brand is Sophia's and the one I'm talking about is called Oil-Free Cilantro & Lime dressing.
Use it not only on your salads but as a marinade too. Visit the website and find a location near you that you can purchase this.
Thank you SO much for this information!
