From album: Nina Simone at Village Gate:

(composed by Macgimsey)

lyrics:

I told Jesus it would be alright if He changed my name
I told Jesus it would be alright if He changed my name
I told Jesus it would be alright if He changed my name
And He told me that I would go hungry if He changed my name
And He told me that I would go hungry if He changed my name
And He told me that I would go hungry if He changed my name

But I told Jesus it would be alright if He changed my name
I told Jesus it would be alright if He changed my name
So I told Him it would be alright and the world would hate me
That I would go hungry if He changed my name

  • omg this really touched me

  • I think she means Changing her name from more of a biblical stand point then that of a slave stand point. God changed many peoples name throughout the Bible such as (Abram to Abraham, Sarai to Sarah, and Saul to Paul) as a way of stating that he was ready for them to begin doing his work. I always thought this song was a way of telling the Lord I am ready to do your work so by changing my name you are changing my very character.

  • We just reviews this website at PIG CITY RECORDS DOT COM... It's really great. If you like At The Village Gate you'll really like our site & reivew

  • By changing her name she means she told Jesus he could make her over in his image...be reborn in Christ and leave her former self behind. The persecution she describes can be found in various instances in history...but the love of God and Christ overcomes all.

  • I love this song. I am not a Christian but to me it perfectly describes the commitment one must make to achieve any type of personal transformation. Very meaningful.
