Barb Krumhardt, Senior Lecturer in Genetics, Development, and Cell Biology at Iowa State University, livens up her 8 a.m. large (approx. 400 students) lecture classes and gets students actively engaged by using case history clicker questions. Before covering the lecture content, she presents the question(s) that they will need to answer later on. The lecture then includes the information students need to process to be able to answer the question(s). Students earn "clicks" for each correct answer and one for participation—plus, they know that the same case history questions will be part of the exam database. Students also engage in small-group discussions with peer-to-peer learning as they compete in teams to answer clicker questions.
