Just weeks prior to the release of his new album, The Burning Bright, Royal Wood and his band recorded live versions of songs from the album in front of an intimate audience of family, friends and fans for CBC Music's First Play Live.
The performances were loose and fun, and spirits were high. The Burning Bright is Wood's strongest and most powerful work yet.
The newest member of Wood's band is drummer Mark Mariash, who brings with him years of experience playing with some of the biggest names in Canadian music. Mariash's rhythms and spontaneity bring the band to a whole new level.
You will recognize singers Felicity Williams and Carleigh Aikins from Bahamas. When Wood heard them sing, he knew he had to have them in his band. The results bring a whole new dimension to his songs, and harken back to a time when Joni Mitchell ruled the airwaves.
Longtime band members, bassist Steve Zsirai and producer/guitarist Dean Drouillard, bring the knowledge and experience of being longtime friends with Wood, and their commitment to the songs is like none I have seen before.
Wood's band is at its peak. I dare say they might be the best band in Canada right now, so when Wood comes to your town be sure to see them. First, though, watch them all perform in this First Play Live of The Burning Bright.
