In this video we will be making Nitrobenzene for use in a future video. Nitrobenzene is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H5NO2. Nitrobenzene is a water-insoluble pale yellow oil with an almond-like odor. It freezes to give greenish-yellow crystals. Although occasionally used as a flavoring or perfume additive, nitrobenzene is highly toxic in large quantities and is mainly produced as a precursor to aniline. In the laboratory, it is occasionally used as a solvent, especially for electrophilic reagents.

  • I know you said you're using concentrated nitric acid, and it looks like red fuming nitric acid, but what concentration did you use?

  • @bfesser It is actually white fuming... but it is a bit old.. I would say 90-95%...

  • Good and detailed vid, like it. I carried out this reaction a long time ago in order to make aniline, its derivates and azo dyes.

  • @Anilingelb This is what I planned for the nitro benzene I made... Did you use tin or iron?

  • that's nice work. odd coincidence your use of nitric as i just distilled about 50 ml of fuming nitric today. small world eh?

  • @rogeryermaw True!! though Nitric acid is used often like sulfuric so it in not to surprising. ;-)

  • Holy-Terrorist:>*=* Nitrobenzene, cool!

*=* What haved nitrobenzene in burning?

I speak french and little english.

  • @196Stefan2 Holy-Terrorist:>*=* Interesting, and this process are complexe, explosion are in hazard of rechearch it, it possible to make 99,99% ot TriNitroToluene[T.N.T.]?

I speak french and little english.

  • @bhattshivamm

The direct way of the preparation of TNT from Toluene at once won't work. In a first step, mono-nitrotoluene (ortho- and para-isomere) is made. In the next step, mono-nitrotoluene is further-nitrated under harder conditions (fuming HNO3 instead of 65% HNO3, higher temperature) to TNT. As you already stated: Leave your hands off!

  • @bfesser

for the preparation of (mono)nitrobenzene a nitric acid with 65 % HNO3 is concentrated enough. For the preparation of dinitrobenzene (of nitrobenzene by a further nitration-step) fuming HNO3 (which consists of almost 100% HNO3) becomes necessary. In both cases the concentration of the sulphuric acid is >96 % H2SO4.

  • @Temporum91 - No, he said that he wanted extra cheese on his burger.

  • very informative

  • Whoaaa !!!!

    Drink It now :-)

  • Thanks myst! Just made around 3l of benzene this last week. I'm looking for as many fun things to do with it as possible (not involving anything that is simply an explosive), so this will likely be a first candidate.

  • I love benzene. -3 Favorite chemical. And oh my gosh I love your voice.

  • Hey, dude......

    FYI:

If you perform the same nitration reaction with toluene, that means if you add toluene into H2SO4 + HNO3 solution, the result would be TriNitro Toluene - means TNT !! !! !!

A very hazardous compound and favorite explosive of terrorists.

    DON'T do it EVER .
