In a talk on how the use of electronic medical records (EMRs) can enhance patient safety, Asif Ahmad, CIO of Duke University Health System, looked at error detection methodologies.

Noting that many healthcare organizations have been in a "rat race" to acquire new technologies such as EMR or computerized physician order entry (CPOE), Ahmad called for them to become more "self-learning," leveraging their existing data to improve patient safety and care. "Use the information you have to improve the problem of safety," he said. "We need to help ourselves out."
