Thats quiet easy: Just say: "Guten Tag, sadly I cant speak germen, do you speak english?" Many people in germany can speak english. Maybe not perfect, but good enough to communicate (My english is'nt very good, bit I think you will understnad me).
But please, dont start with "Heeeeelooooo, nice to meet you, how are, wonderfull ( great amazing" bla bla. We dont like this kind of ambency. Just say Guten Tag and ask your question!
Enjoy your stay in germany!

@philly442 try other languages. germany is multicultural. 60% of germans speak 3 languages or more! (i only german and english, but i am looking forward to learn spanish)

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I lived in Germany for 15 years and I know the Germans roads, cities and attractions better than I do my home state of Ohio. My inlaws are German and live in Ruhpolding, 20 km's north of Salzberg Austria in Germany. I had such a good time. I'd love to know more but maybe it's to much to ask. No country speaks english better than Holland. Germans aren't too bad. I just learned it as I went. Well it looks like you had a great time. Thanks again. 5 stars !!!!!!
i want to go soooo badly! how do you communicate with germans if ur english how they understand?? well tryin get back to me thanks.
