  • Griffon-engined Spitfire X1V was the best piston-engined fighter of WW11 and amazingly it was operational as early as July 1944.

  • @LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH agreed the mkXIV was the very best spit variant and possibly the best fighter of the war

  • @KreeRSLee Wrong. The FW190 first appeared in late 1941 over France, this caused the RAF to reduce it's offensive fighter sweeps over France. Secondly, the MK IX Spitfire did not utilise the Griffin engine, it used an uprated Merlin with circa 1750 Bhp. The Griffin produced 2050 Bhp and it appeared with the MK XIV Spit. The MK IX was the equal to the FW 190, the MK XIV was the nemesis of the FW, a killer powerhouse & killer.

  • 0:46 PUSH HIM IN!!

  • @wildhippy By Battle of Britain Germany knew they needed to escort there bombers. Unescorted bomber were getting shot down by hurries. 109's escorted bombers. But had limted fuel ( Time for 15 mins by the time they made the coastline ) for a dogfight Which had the RAF think : 200 Luftwaffle before dropping bombs with esorts or 160 unesorted bombers to kill after they dropped there bomb loads The spitfire took them head on and the Hurries chased them back

  • @wildhippy 1 of the factors yes ..When a scramble was lauched Spit pilots would spend most of the flight time climbing for a 5 - 10 min fight To have speed and Alt on your enemy was to your favor. Knowing what the enemys plane type was came 2nd. Knowing what that plane could do came 3rd A spit could out turn a 109 A 109 could out roll a spitfire. it came down to who was the better pilot and where he was in the dogfight. Cont, above

  • and it was ever so much fun

  • Saving to my 'aviation history' playlist.

  • @Rico8458 depends on the altitude of the dogfight

  • excellent feedback
