ibnaidjazari i c that you are not convinced of why sunnis show so much devotion to the prophet, first of all all praise is due to Allah and He alone is worthy of worship. Quite simple really Allah has called him his habeeb (beloved of allah) so that makes it farz to muslims to show the highest degree of respect to the beloved.....
When we praise the Prophet (SAW) : 1. We show respect to him (SAW) whom Allah ordered us to respect. 2. We are thanking Allah for the Prophet of Mercy (SAW) which is a great favour from his many favours to us. 3. We show to Allah our love for the one whom He loves. 4. We show our humility and humbleness and lower our pride
When we praise the Prophet(SAW) we always maintain in our heart that even though the Prophet (SAW) is infinitely better than us, he (SAW) is INFINITLY smaller and inferior against the greatness of Allah Almighty -and so there is never any question of shirk.
When we praise the Prophet (SAW), the praise itself, IS FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH'S PLEASURE. And when we respect/praise the highest Prophet (SAW) we still don't match the way Adam had to be respected by the angels on Allah's command ie with a Sujood! Before anyone wants to label respect or praise as shirk they should think about that sujood that Allah ordered the Angels to do Adam.
The highest Prophet is Muhammed Mustafa (SAW) and he said if you hear my name you should say Sallaho-alayhi-wasalam otherwise you are stingy/miserly. So supposing we said "Sallaho-alayhi-wasalam", not once, but with love, we said it more or even as a Qasida (after all, he did pray for us day and night--"My Ummah, My Ummah") then as a result would we be tending towards Shirk? ...No, definitely not. He (SAW) was considering us so much, yet some foolish ones are saying don't consider him back.
The Prophet was always asking for his Ummah. Even on the Isra-wal-Meraj he asked for the prayers to be reduced from 50 to 5. If it remained at 50, that would be a prayer about every 29 minutes in 24 hours of the day. We should at least thank and praise him for that alone. "Thankyou sir, you are very kind and considerate, Peace be upon you Oh our dear Prophet". And to truly thank Allah, one must thank the one who is the sabab(means) as well -otherwise the thanks to Allah is not complete.
Allah says to stand behind Maqam-I- Ibrahim and pray 2 rakats (2:125). If the Koran itself had not said it, and instead a Sufi had, some people would have said, "We will not pray there. Why should we regard so highly Maqam-I-Ibrahim it's just the footprints of Prophet Ibrahim and we will only praise and respect Allah and this is a clear shirk to regard a Prophet so highly". -- People should think on such points.
Unfortunately, some people, with their NARROW VISION and HARDENED HEARTS, that do not have the capacity to feel true love and respect for the Prophet SAW, insist that anyone who possesses these attributes should be labelled with shirk.
Whom Allah loves, we must love (for His sake). Whom Allah respects, we must respect (for His sake). Whom Allah PRAISES, we must PRAISE (FOR HIS S A K E!). ...And that is Muhammed Mustafa Sallaho-alahi wa-alihi wa-sahbihi wa-salam.
To learn real Islam, people must try to find true inheritors of the Prophet's knowledge and spirituality and they must seek out true Shaykhs --Shaykhs like Maulana Shaykh Nazim Al-Haqqani.
