"Where've you been?" I asked, spreading chocolate over some homemade cupcakes as Courtney walked into the apartment.
"It's doesn't matter." she answered quickly. "What's the name of your Maid of Honor?"
"Nina. Why? You wanna take her place?" I scoffed, shaking my head. "That's not gonna happen."
"Is her last name Dobrev?" she asked nervously.

I lifted my eyes off the cupcakes and onto my younger sister. She stood behind the couch, fiddling with her fingers. I smelled guilt.

"Courtney, what did you do?!" I grilled, slamming the frosting-covered knife onto the counter.
"I didn't do anything!" she rebuked. "But your supposed 'best friend' is a lying backstabber!"
"Excuse me?!" I shouted. "You haven't even met her! You don't know anything about her!"
She shut her eyes tightly and exhaled deeply, flaring her nostrils. "I stopped by your office today, but I was told that you were taking the week off. So when I went into the elevator, there were this two girls trash-talking about a woman who was getting married! It was you, Selena!" she stressed, pointing her finger directly at me.
"Courtney, just stop!" I yelled, my eyes widening with disbelief as her words rambled in my mind. "You're being absurd! Nina would never do that to me!"
"But people lie about who they are all the time!" she said, waving her arms in the air.
"Of course you'd know all about that." I muttered in annoyance, picking the knife back up.
She groaned loudly and grabbed her head. "Why don't you believe me?!"
"Because." I gritted through my teeth. "All my life, you have never proved to me that you were trustworthy. The only person I could count on was dad."
"This is ridiculous." she said quietly.

At that moment, a knock on the door was heard. Courtney and I exchanged blank glances, then I continued with my project. I heard her sigh, dragging her feet across the floor.

"It's you!" I heard someone say from the kitchen. "What are you doing here?"

I quietly set my utensils down and took off my apron, walking into the living room.

"Nina!" I exclaimed, welcoming her into my arms while glaring at Courtney as she shook her head.
"I just wanted to stop by and see how you were doing." she smiled. Then confusion gradually spread onto her face as she noticed Courtney's presence. "You two know each other?"
I grimaced. "This is my sister, Courtney."
"Y-your... sister???" she choked out, beginning to look nervous.
