I'm an old painter and this is how I paint. Many people I meet say they would love to paint, but don't know how. It's not hard, I promise. This is one technique that makes things simple for the beginner. Solve all your problems in black and white (or raw umber and white for authenticity), and glaze colours after. Much easier and gives a lovely many-layer effect to the painting. And incidentally how Flemish artists like Rembrandt and Vermeer painted in the middle ages.

  • Is this the same technique that Johannes Vermeer used?

  • @OaktownsGreatest It appears so, I learned the technique from "Methods and Materials of the Old Masters" by Sir Charles Locke Eastlake. We can also see some of Vermeer's working in his own paintings.

  • Rembrandt was DUTCH....... not Flemish!!!

  • you are correct! on a modern map :)
