  • you should have included Sarah Vaughan, she has a darker voice than any of these singers.

  • @TheCmelmoneyman

Shit! This is as deep as Zarah Leander. Both are elder women though.

  • kronblom98, that Mariah bashing was unnecessary. You imply that she "fakes" and "strains" her voice "to sound dark" as opposed to Toni.

Firstly, You should get the knowledge what "dark" means, because you confuse vocal timbre with vocal range. Mariah covers Toni's lower range effortlessly. It's natural for her since her speaking voice is low.

The thing that differentiates them is vocal weight. Toni has exceptionally heavy voice.

  • No, I don't confuse vocal timbre with range but I find it hard to separate "dark" from "heavy" and I have never heard of vocal "weight". Please educate.

  • Yes you did confuse all 3 terms.

If you need example, Brandy's voice is dark, low and light at the same time.

  • @sandrakeller2 Dark, low and light at the same time...now that is confusing.

Anyway, in technical terms what does make a voice "heavy"? Is it bandwidth or centre frequency? Just to suggest that we are talking about the same thing I would say that both Toni B and Tanita T have a "heavy" voice (or harsh for that matter).

  • Thanks for the quiz at the end! I figured that the first song was sang by a woman. Also, I never knew that so many people (or just men sometimes) had a thing for women with deep, dark and/or baritone voices. The Internet (Youtube) is truly a remarkable place!

  • @sandrakeller2 you silly. A voice can't be dark( =thick =heavy )and light at the same time. Brandy and Mariah have husky, light voices. Husky - that's what it is.

BTW Mariah's voice doesn't sit that low but she has good lower extension to her range. She supports these notes nicely and can phrase down there endlessly She's an example how things should be done.

You are right that Toni's voice is heavier plus it sits low.Contrary to kronblom98 I think she fakes her tone sometimes.

  • Easy to recognise Zarah at the end - her voice is so special, and amazing! Such a good singer!

  • Does anybody know what is Nina Simone's vocal range?

  • OH MAN u know whos got a DEEP SULTRY VOICE is MARIAH SCIMONE!!! I love all of these women and mariah is just like 1 of them and I know she's the next big thing and youll think the same as soon as you hear her! Im her BIGGEST FAN and even made fan videos for her! youll thank me later

  • Allison Iraheta has a deep voice as well..

  • So Mariah hits both lowest and highest notes? How talented!

  • @murtazamurad1994 Search 'cher love and pain' and check it out

  • M. Carey is a coloratura mezzo - soprano, not an alto at all and not a soprano a!
