this is and old elevator at the foshay the hotel was built in 1929.And the observation deck is on the 31st floor but there are only 30 floors so i had to go to the 30th floor and and take the stairway to the observation deck,Plus it is the only observation deck left in minneapolis (and the veiw is breathtaking, well i thought it was)

I worked night security in the Foshay for a few years in the late 90's/early 2000s, I took breaks up on the observation deck. Nice when it was foggy and you couldn't see any other bldgs. When I was working there the elevator(s) would break down regularly and they often had to custom make pieces to repair them as the original parts were no longer available. I believe everything was updated when or before it became the W.

There's another elevator there that goes to 4 floors.

It's not restricted to hotel guests, it's open to the public.

It's sad that observation decks are closing down, and it seems like (according to the key card reader in the elevator) that this one is restricted to hotel guests. The post 9/11 era is really taking it's shape. It's not our fault that this living in fear thing happened, it's the lax security and the open cockpits on the airplanes before 9/11 that caused the attacks, and the government blames it on us. The fault was not from unsecured high-rise buildings, but the airplanes.
