Mexican Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan joined CBS Bob Schieffer to talk about the violence on Mexicos border resulting from the drug trade. Sarukhan told Schieffer that the U.S. should take the debate over marijuana legalization seriously. This is a debate that needs to be taken seriously, that has to be — that we have to engage in on both sides of the border, both in producing, in trafficking, and in consumption countries, and it is a debate that has to be taken on with seriousness, he said.

  • Really?? I did not know that. It's about time we legalize it, it does no harm and it's the reason there's a war on drugs in the first place. The violence is caused by prohibition, just like with alcohol in the 30s.

  • In Portugal ALL drugs were made legal. If you were caught with drugs you could either choose therapy or just walk away and continue doing so without jail time.

Time Magazine reports that the decriminalization of drugs in Portugal has reduced the use of all the drugs and is a great success while the US War on Drugs is a complete failure.

  • Imagine if just a few random states quietly and peacefully just turned their backs to the rotten federal politics of DC and left the union. States like Vermont, California, Texas, Alaska, Michigan, etc. Then they legalized pot and hemp, companies and individuals no longer have federal taxes, foreign nations can start to like us again, local economies would begin to thrive in a matter of months, other states and nations would emulate them. It would revolutionize the world.

    It just takes courage.

  • We tax an already weak economy in order to give subsidies to poor farmers, then we tell them they are not allowed to grow canabis. Not even industrial hemp. WTF?!?! Politicians aren't dumb. They know exactly what they are doing, and what the consequences are. They aren't dumb . . .they are deliberately evil.

The best solution is for states to start seceding left and right. We don't need DC. It's just a rotten pile of horseshit that's destroying the rest of the nation.

  • @honermusic Don't forget the rest of the world, us drug politics is europe's drug politics, when us has legalized it the world will legalize it. We will be a marijuana world in the future! :)

  • Mexico could legalize it and give the US the finger, they are one of biggest supplier of oil so I don't think he US government could do much. They may do it just to get there tourism going again. If Mexico collapses gas will go over $6 gallon in a week and the US go into a real depression.

  • @code9cook dude weed isn't legal in mexico, it'll be cool but it is not. US has to legalize it first for mexico te legalize it.

  • we will contunue to fund the cartels until weed is legal in the USA

  • "In weed we trust."

  • no one tells the wind which way to blow

  • we need weed
