"So Gay"

This is an original poem of advocacy.
I am a technically a heterosexual, but more importantly I am a human being. And so are you. So let's all act like it.

"So Gay"

In passing
In this hall
I hear it all.
In this makeshift Hades
The hellhounds bay and bark.
Murmuring, snearing
joking jearing

Thoughtless accounts of incivility
BLUDGEON my eardrums.
And resonate off the red walls
Of a young liberal's "bleeding heart"

This is what they say :
"Hey homo!"-
"Sup faggot?"-
"Oh my GOD that is SO
- gay."

Thrown around like some abomination
Some miscalculation
Some faulty education

That "homo" means weak
That "gay" means pointless
That sexual orientation
Has ANYTHING to do with
Intelligence,
Or relevance.

Two boys hug in a high school hallway
And exclaim "no homo"
So that their peers don't go
And judge them,
Mock them,
Mark them as
Gay.
And THAT is not okay.

For once in your life, America
Think before you open your
GODDAMNED mouth.

Say what you mean,
Mean what you say.
Stupid isn't GAY.
Boring ISN'T gay.
Shitty ISN'T GAY!

Your comprehension of synonyms
Is as skewed as your sense of social decency.
To use the term so recklessly the way you do
To practice such little civilty is
SICKENING

It's hurtful
It's ignorant
It's just so..
Hetero.

Ya see there?
Are ya now aware?

How sexuality
Hasn't got a thing to do with jack SHIT.
So drop the homophobic shtick.

Now go ahead, go ahead and judge me
My short red hair
My V-neck T
My feminist views
And label this poem as "gay"
Because I GIVE A DAMN
Because I AM who I AM.
But YOU are wrong.

Judge the boy
Who listens to Sufjan Stevens songs
In his too-skinny jeans
Because he writes or reads,
Or dances or dreams.
But YOU are wrong.
This is OUR swan song.

And we will stand STRONG
Strong as Sequoias
With bark as unbendable as steel
For what we think-
What we believe to be real.

We are not gay. We are not straight.
We are not hetero. We are not crooked.

DAMMIT!
We are human beings-
And we are teeming
With hopes, and dreams, and aspirations
That don't precede our reputations.

So drop
The macho man charade
The "I'm so brave" facade

And intentional or otherwise
Realize.
Gay is NOT your synonym to use.
Not YOUR slang to abuse.

It is a sexuality
A way of life
A life of strife
And NO AMOUNT of inconsiderate substitution
Or pointed propaganda will ever change that.

But if YOU want to be
a better person, America.
Start
By reevaluating
Your thesaurus.

Okay, I'm straight, but my best friend is gay, and everytime I hear someone using the word "gay" as an insult or in a demeaning manner, I speak out against it.

But may I just add one thing to your message? In addition to "gay," why don't we also add the word "retarded," to the list of words not to be incorrectly used as insults. That one hurts just as worse, and I'd like to see an end to its abuse.
