A lot of tribes in the Northeast grow what's called a three sisters garden. It's a traditional garden plot where we grow three crops together because they take care of each other. The first one is corn, which grows up as a stalk. The second crop is beans, which grow as a vine and they always grow better when they vine up something like the corn stalk. The third crop we grow is squash, which has big leaves that absorb moisture from the ground and weave so tightly on the ground that if weeds try to grow they choke them out.
The best part of the scenario is this -- what one crop takes out of the soil, the other two put back in and they do that in conjunction with each other in a process called symbiosis. This is when natural systems are stronger together than they are apart. One of the keys to success in life is to surround yourself with your own three sisters garden. Surround yourself with whatever is good for you, whether it's the people you spend time with or the things you do.
