SolenoidI guess everybody has heard about solenoids. Solenoid is a coil of wire wound on a cylindrical surface. Well, if put simply then it is any inductance coil without a core. A solenoid's distinctive feature is its ability to draw ferromagnetic materials into the coil. Its power characteristic depends on the magnetic system structure (i.e. core and frame) and can be close to a linear characteristic.Let's try to make a solenoid and see how it works. We take a metal object and place it into the coil.DC solenoids are most often used as progressive power electrical drives. Unlike regular electromagnets they ensure substantial stroke of the mechanism. They drive the blades for cutting tickets and receipts in cash registers. They also drive lock catches, valves in engines, hydraulic systems, and other devices. The most popular and widely used solenoid is the so-called starting relay. It is a mechanism which connects a starter motor with the engine flywheel.
