Bicycle benefits:
Fast
Low signature (noise, dust, etc)
Reduced maintenance logistics and ease to maintain by operator.
It can be issued in large numbers.
Can be shoulder carried when needed, some even float (main frame tubes and tires are airtight)
Can be customized to carry equipment (see Swiss military bikes and German Panzerfaust carring bikes of WW2)

@AlRoderick said "Anyone thinking it looks dumb for a soldier to ride a bike,"
Why? The Vietnamese pwned the American and they moved their troop using inexpensive bicycle.

i don not understand that.

@PhantomOfPanton Unlikely. Montague makes a solid bike. Granted some of the components they use aren't always that great but since they are all standard, they can be replaced if you don't like them. In all my testing I've found Montague to offer the best ride, and Brompton to fold down the smallest. Both brands will last you a long time if you take care of them - and don't leave them locked outside all winter. But since they fold to fit indoors, you shouldn't need to.

I heard these bikes were basically disposable, that they didn't last long and had problems! is this true?

The Montague Paratrooper has long been the folding bike that sets the performance standard for all others. With a solid frame and full size wheels I have found that it rides better than any other folder out there, and better than a lot of Trek and Cannondale bikes as well. I have tested most folding bikes, and for ride quality, you can't beat Montague. Folded size is bigger than a Brompton, but Montague is really focused on the ride, and less on the folded size.

Not a joke. I admit I cracked a smile, but I seriously think this is a cool thing. Obviously not every vehicle is appropriate in every situation, just use the right tool for the right job. Plus, soldiers do recreation too.

The fact that you have to remove the front wheel to fold the bike is a deal beaker for me. Probably a sturdy bike when in use.

i just got one

@AlRoderick By the same token I might rather slow march with my finger on the trigger and watch for bad guys rather than get ambushed on a "huffy."
Anyone thinking it looks dumb for a soldier to ride a bike, all I have to say is that it's six times more efficient to ride a bike than walk/hike/march. I can only imagine that a soldier would rather look a bit goofy riding in full kit and keep that extra energy for fighting than stagger to his destination dead tired.
