  • Corelli is a lyric tenor

  • @sithenor No, he is dramatic or spinto, but no way lyric.

  • @tehen162 I'd say Corelli was a true tenore di forza with the capacity to sing lyrically as well. Certainly he could sing much more lyrically than Del Monaco.

Don't get me wrong; MDM was a great dramatic tenor. But his technique was such that he couldn't match Corelli for lyricism without strain:) --

  • @stevevandien I agree. Tenore di forza is the Italian equivalent to dramatic tenor. Corelli regarded himself as a dramatic.

  • @tehen162 For me he is the most exciting expressive I ever heard and I had the good luck to see him in Trovatore, Ernani,Forza del Destino.. Poliuto, Carmen, adrianna Lecouvreur and Turandot All performances in europe as I never had the opportunity of attending a Met performance although I have many on CD

  • @miciatoffina I envy you. What was his voice like live?

  • @CEMILIOB Video description says clearly that this is a playback video. Corelli retired in 1975, the video was made in 1982 for an Italian tv program using his earlier recording of the aria. Corelli was a tenor (dramatic or heroic) not a lyric bariton. This is a tenor aria.

  • This is my first exposure to this extraordinary Artist. His gift was truly from the breath of God. Bravo!! I must have an encore!

  • He was one of the four principles in the really legendary "Carmen," with Leontyne Price as Carmen, Mirella Freni as Michaela, and Robert Merrill as Escamillo (the Toreador). He is so luscious and handsome, so heartbroken, so all out furiously devastated at the end -- I really recommend looking for that recording, it's just pure pleasure no matter who is doing what.

  • I love hearing him sing. He has such a huge top! So rich and full. For me, one of the best dramatic tenors ever. Thanks for posting.

  • @stevevandien I heard Corelli at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. That was the old building, not the Lincoln Center building used now. I don't remember which opera. I had purchased a standing room ticket for $3.00. We stood in the aisle near the front, and the sound was beautiful. I haven't been to the Met since the early 1960s, so I can't compare the acoustic quality then to today's standard. At the time, as a teenager, I thought it was perfect.

  • @tehen162 Yep, he was bigger than spinto, although some contemporary operaphiles use that term to describe him. I think they do in large part because they simply have never heard a true Italian dramatic tenor of this caliber; they don't know what else to call him:). Best, Steve

  • @1gaudete In what opera did you hear Corelli? How did he sound in that house?

  • @johndavidryan

he has the emotion of a spinto or dramatic - not lyric, and thats perfect!! this opera is writen for a spinto or dramitic tenor NOT for a lyic!!!!

  • @CEMILIOB hi :) is a lyric baritone the same as dramatic tenor??
