Burrngupurrngu is one of my all-time favourite yirdaki craftsmen. Not only does he make great instruments, he has a cheeky personality that stands in marked contrast to his status as an elder.
In my opinion, Burrngupurrngu excels in making higher-keyed yirdaki, his instruments in lower keys being only somewhat average in terms of acoustic quality. His best instruments have a wonderful liveliness, full of energy and vitality. And because Burrngupurrngu doesn't work the bore, his instruments have fantastic acoustic balance when he puts in the time to harvest quality trees.
This yirdaki exemplifies Burrngupurrngu's masterly craftsmanship. It is a very light instrument at only 1.9 kg, the bore natural all the way save for a bit of rasping on the lip of the bell... definitely no chiseling on this one.
This is not a voluminous yirdaki meaning its acoustics are compact, yet the bore is still nicely conical which gives the instrument good back pressure and excellent texture and richness to its voice. The yirdaki responds quickly to tongued attacks and is great for fast percussive playing styles. The G# overtone is a nice complement to the F fundamental, allowing for easy and lightning quick 'toots'.
Larry Winiwini puts this yirdaki through its paces, thanks Wamut!
