Even now that I know how to do it, I find it still takes about 20 attempts before it works! One helpful thing I found out (2005 Z4) is you need to hold the phone up by the rearview mirror. Only part of my phonebook loaded though. Not sure how to clear. Probably un-pair and re-pair.
You should be able to find the key on a x3 on the back, take the cover off on the left hand side. There you should see the code.

@ajclark95 The dealership can reset or give u a passkey but there are also other spots on the car to find it yourself.
