Missouri Prepares for 1st Execution Since 2005

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Missouri corrections officials are preparing for the state's first execution in nearly four years, even as attorneys for Dennis Skillicorn continue efforts to spare his life.

Skillicorn is scheduled to die by injection at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. He was one of three men convicted in the 1994 death of Richard Drummond of Excelsior Springs, who was killed after stopping to help the men after their car broke down on Interstate 70.

Supporters say Skillicorn has reformed and is a role model for other prisoners. Gov. Jay Nixon is still weighing a clemency request.

Executions were on hold while courts debated whether lethal injection was cruel and unusual punishment. Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld lethal injection, and a federal judge approved Missouri's three-drug protocol.

Holy cow! My heart goes out for the victim's family, their loss must be tremendous and the grief never ending/. I cannot help but think how as a society we now are asking Dennis Skillihorn's family to bury him knowing that his death was caused by the hands of the state and law. And while I don't know the specifics how can Missourri be okay with the idea of executing someone who wasn't a gunman? In my eyes just another reason why the death penalty is used unjusticely and should be banned.
