Check out Berlin's official website: http://www.berlinpage.com

A quirky little track from Berlin's first album "Information" * (1980), showing the band's raw New Wave style even before they made it big with The Metro and Sex (I'm A...).

A definite influence on VH1's "Pop-Up Video"!

The vocalist on this song is Virginia Macolino, Terri Nunn had left the band temporarily at the time to pursue an acting career (of course she rejoined the band from "Pleasure Victim" onwards).

I think the Norwegian band Surferosa took a few hints from this album, especially on their own debut album "Shanghai My Heart".

* Sorry for the slightly poor sound quality, the album has never been remastered or issued on cd and I had to do quite a bit of searching even to find this vinyl rip. It's been recorded too loud, pitched slightly too fast and with some grounding issues but you'll get the idea.

  • Jarren, I'll say again that I really appreciate you putting this up. Man I am really realizing how different Berlin would have been with Virginia at the helm--much more intense and unsettling. Virginia ended up performing in an early 80's punk band called "Beast of Beast" with one of the members of The Angry Samoans on drums and opening for The Angry Samoans and Black Flag, so much different than what Berlin went on to do; she even says she left Berlin because she wanted to keep it more intense.

  • @dgasten Interesting, I just googled Beast Of Beast and found Virginia's blogspot!

Had a listen to some of the tracks here on Youtube too, excellent punk.

Also read that Virginia "Mac" was also the girlfriend of Joey Ramone!

Now that The Ramones are in my head, I'm off to listen to some Helen Love...

  • @Jarren202 Was she the one who later left Joey for Johnny and inspired the classic song "THE KKK TOOK MY BABY AWAY"?

  • @MartyRotten Hey man, I'm not too sure. I did a quick google search and apparently the song was written by Joey about Johnny stealing his girlfriend, but I honestly don't know if that was Virginia or not.

There isn't much information online about Virginia, so perhaps you may get more info regarding her relationship with Joey on Ramones forums.

Thanks for checking out Berlin! :)

  • Jarren... The vinyl rips you found may very well be mine!

  • @chippy92688 Haha that's crazy! Well, thank you very much if they are!

Luckily I have my own copy of Information now, although I have to admit the sound quality isn't the best even from the pure vinyl source.

It would really benefit from a total remastering job, but I doubt the cost of such a procedure would meet demand. :(

  • @Jarren202 Okay the girl in question was named Linda and she later married Johnny. Even though they were never the best of friends to begin with, the incident with Linda drove them even further apart, even though they continued to work together. Joey and VIriginia dated about 10 years later.

  • i love new wave defo my kind music. "my cup of tea, i am a new wave freak". The european music from 80s and early 90s is best music in world. Modern commercial music is too repetitive and lost, very lost, the best inspiring music is from 80s as all tunes are original and different.

  • Yup, girlfriend to Joey Ramone she was! That surprised me too. That was in the 1990's. Actually I didn't know that Virginia had a blog, will have to find it. She's sure got a great look; thick brown hair, big lips, slender body, flashing eyes--looks very Italian and just outrageously cute. She was a model too.

  • Before even Terri Nunn. :-)
