Huddled within the black depths of a coal freighter headed for Sweden, young Zygmund Sikora already had much to look back on. As a teenage member of Poland's underground army, Zygmund fought throughout the Second World War amidst the horrors of the Nazi invasion, occupation, and genocide.
As a member of the AK, or Home Army, Mr. Sikora played the hypocrite, smiling at his German employers by day and sabotaging them by night. Not even his family knew young Zygmund was dynamiting rail-lines, helping POWs escape, stealing weapons and, when he had to, killing.
Every aspect of the nazi terror touched Mr. Sikora's personal life. From his continuous underground involvement to watching his own brother die in a concentration camp, he experienced the brunt of Nazi atrocities. When Poland fell under Soviet control in 1945, he continued his armed resistance and found out first-hand about the infamous torture techniques of the KGB. Soon he had but two choices: escape Poland, or die.
