disclaimer:

1) this video was made primarily for fun and exploration purposes.

2) the idea was to see how aikido would/could possibly used in 'real life' situations.

3) there are millions of ways one can attack and millions of ways one can deal with the attacks. these were merely responses based on the limited aikido experience that we had at the time.

4) whilst the initial scenario was planned, e.g. who played the role of attacker (uke) and defender (tori), the subsequent attacks and counters were spontaneous.

5) all participants in the video were as of the time the video was made (16 December 2007), junior aikido students. in fact, 2 of them are slackers who have been to training sessions less than 10 times in the whole year. unfortunately, i don't have the luxury of the same excuse, so any mistakes i've made are failings on my part.

6) as you can imagine, this is a compilation of the best (haha) bits of our little experiment. please watch the NG (bloopers) version at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sp74JdZ44U to see how most the session *actually* went. ;)

7) most of all, just sit back, relax and laugh. this is not to be taken too seriously. personally, i've learnt quite a lot from the experience... it might very well influence how i train from now on.. cheers :P

  • Great video.

True spirit of Aikido, fun and as effective as you want it to be.

My history is from Kung Fu, since 1981, and have just started Aikido. Loving every minute of it. Thanks for the vid.

  • thanks bud! i'm happy to see another fellow traveller =) i would love to learn from your experience... may our paths cross someday.

  • hiya Blndrfist, it's been a while! sure has taken you a while to go through my videos eh? yeah - this was done with my mates about a year ago already. massively out of date. i'm always keen to experiment with people outside my circle - just not sure where to look. are you keen? the next time you come Down Under, give me a holler and I'll whip out my vidcam. hope you're not camera shy! cheers mate.

  • "out of date" is defined by wikitionary as "Not current, outmoded, out of style, or too old to be used".

and if you read my msg properly, i said i was "keen to experiment with people outside my circle", not have "a sparring match". the motives are quite different.

if you're happy to set that up, i'll be quite happy to video tape it. sounds fun. ideally, i'd rather it be with you, but i understand that sometimes other commitments get in the way. oh, i'm in Hobart, Tasmania by the way.

  • @Blndrfist Guy, you're 41, when do you grow up? Or maybe you were 40 back then, that's not the kind of language you should be using.

And seriously, "Gaykido? you're falling almost as low as consolefanboys.

Seriously, grow up, learn things about martial arts. Then come back.

  • A colleague at my Aikido dojo was attacked in the street by a man with a huge screwdriver and he managed his way out very well. The attacker was injured. We also had a young Aikido student (he started practicing Aikido very young) who was attacked by a gang of young people with knifes. He defended himself and -this is true- after that, he was arrested by the police because the gang accused him of injuries!

  • Good work. As an Aikido student, I wouldn't like to fight a pugilist and never ever would like to be thrown to the floor with a bjj practitioner. However, when you are on the street, anything can happen, as any serious martial art practitioner knows. A friend of mine was a TKD black belt when challenged by a pugilist. He remembered pugilists are used to get down when they receive an upper punch. He did so and it worked! After that he just kicked this guy (who was a thief by the way).

  • Good video.

On your kotegaeshi, keep you back straight (good posture). When you are moving into the pin, control their elbow by bending it slightly and moving it over their head.

  • @Blndrfist i just hope that you are not older than 13 and will feel terribly ashamed for what you wrote here. no respect, dude, and that's never a good way. cheers.

  • I liked the video. Also I liked a point you have made that in short concludes that its about comparing NOT competing. Also to everyone that is a fan of MMA and brute-force martial arts - try and practice it when your in your 50s when your body is just damaged (or even later). Also if I would have to make a statement and decide what martial art is the best I would put it this way : in a real life situation it all comes down to the person rather then to the martial art.

  • @Blndrfist @Blndrfist hahaha Gaykido. That's pretty funny. I've also heard Ai-cult-do too. That one made me giggle. Just read this comment and felt compelled to reply (although being a year too late). Blndrfist, not every one has the same motivations. If you just want to practice hurting people then muay thai and BJJ are definitely the way to go. They are extremely effective forms of self defense. As for Aikido, maybe it works, maybe it doesnt. Personally, I don't give a rats arse. Its fun!

  • great to see aikido used in real life. isn't that part of Morihei wanted to see? that this method of keeping peace even in strife be used in the real world, and not just in a dojo? we need more practicing aikido in their word, deed, and dealing with increasingly frustrated people in the world.
