Removing the slag from the liquid iron, prior to tapping off the EAF. This is a very hot and dangerous process. See the burn marks on the protective glass and safety shield of the control room.
The slag will get used for road ballast later on. Note the chains on the loaders tyres at the end of the video.

  • I begin work with Corus, england in august as a graduate engineer. Im very new to steel making. Does the slag get reworked? i mean what happens to the material once removed?

  • The slag gets used for road ballast as far as I'm aware.

I do electrical work there so not too sure where it ends up exactly.

  • Yall don't have slag pots?? Just curious.

  • Nope, it gets dumped a level below the furnace where a grader takes it out from.

  • hot work i work for a steel mill in indiana. Harrison steel casting company. how do you fluff the slag? throw carbon on it before you hit it with o2.

  • Not 100% sure. I work on the electrical side there and do maintenance on the 11 and 33 kV ocb's.

  • Hmm...I didn't see this video before, and looks like it must be very bright considering that dark green light filter or something.. =D

  • hanysk - this is a small EAF 55t gross

Nongbe07 - slag is crushed for roading

Nucorwivy - No slag pots just dumped in th pit and removed by that big CAT. Less maintenance than using carriers.

Fleetwoodu812 - slag is foamed with breeze coke injected just above steel surface.

  • how many tons is in arc....in Ostrava(Czechrepublic) ArcelorMittal steel factory we have four oxygen tandem furnace with capacity about 500 tons in one.
