The host belongs in the same category as the "Balloon boy's Dad" who just wants to see his fuggly mug on TV. I would like to have seen more IWO JIMA landscape and less of him stammering nonsense and trying to create drama for the show in the tunnels. Fuel barrels? What a bonehead! Those barrels were for water, geez, even my 10 yr old knows that!
I would like to have heard from a real Marine like the Sgt Major! What is his background? Why wasn't HE the host?! - Semper Fi !
Months after shooting the episode on Iwo, an Iwo veteran gave me a copy of a Japanese junior officer's diary, in which he notes storing aviation fuel (in large metal drums) in such a tunnel in the area of Meat Grinder Ridge. I would be happy to share this with you. Water was collected in cisterns as we found inside Mount Suribachi. There was no created drama - of the 300 tunnels on Iwo only 5 are deemed safe by the Navy/Marine Corps & JSDF. Yet we wanted to film as many tunnels as we could.
Excellent Show. He probably knows more about the battle than most people who were there. Most vets knew only what was a stones throw from their foxhole. People need to know this stuff.
Just because he has a uniform doesn't mean he's pretending to be a marine. He doesn't even act like one unless it's to give a visual of what they did. Im pretty sure he's just paying tribute, so what if he has a uniform. The show was actually really good, and better than any Iwo Jima revisit show I have seen. So I don't understand why you are being negative and bagging the host without anything to back it up. Please explain...if you can.
There was no pretending on my part and at no time did I claim to be something that I am not. I wore that WWII uniform as a personal tribute to honor the men who fought there, like Sgt. Padell, whoes ashes I spread atop Mount Suribachi. This is what my show is all about exploring distant battlefields to remember and honor those who fought and died there. It's unfortunate that you failed to grasp that concept... Honoring and remembering our veterans.
