Specialist police arrived at a secret location this afternoon to detonate two devices that were found under Tom Ugly's Bridge yesterday at around 12.30pm.

The·large contingent of specialist emergency services was called to undertake a detonation operation near the headlands of Malabar.

Police Detectives, supported by the NSW Rescue & Bomb Disposal Squad, Forensic Services, NSW Fire & Rescue Hazmat and Special Operations Ambulance all worked together to render two devices safe.

The first device detonated was a pipe bomb, and the second was a gas cylinder.

Both devices were safely removed from the "NABCO" chamber by a police officer·wearing a "Bomb Suit". The first "pipe bomb" device was laid in place and a charge was used to blow off the end cap. The second charge was·seen to have a larger explosion to destroy·a gas cylinder.

Fire hazmat crews monitored the air and placed devices to detect threats such as radiation.

Both devices were found to be benign and are now being examined by forensic services.

  • By the way the bomb suit is bitchin. It looks like a Space-Cowboy from Hell.

  • Tom Ugly's bridge? Really?

  • @GuitarCarbon Doubt it. Haha.

  • @gluemuncher1986 Dead man switch.

  • @xDjAsOnF Dude, don't talk like an idiot. Unless you made the bomb, you don't know what it contains, for all you know it could have contained RDX which is more powerful than TNT. People have been too relaxed with explosives before and the bomb ended up exploding in their face.

  • Unless there was a timed ignition source or an obvious switch, why did they take such extreme measures for this little incident? Oh wait a minute... they're Australian. Nevermind.

  • @xDjAsOnF "wow" you're an idiot. Safety first. Unless you made the device how "lethal" would you know it is? Hence why they treat it at the higher end of the danger scale as it it is far better to be safe than sorry. Safety first and foremost with regard to any explosive device especially something home made and unstable.

  • wow.

did they really need two ambulance, police rescue, and the bomb squad just to detonate a homemade pipe bomb?

the pipe bomb itself is barely lethal, why bother sticking it inside the chamber? and why bother with the remote controlled buggy?
